Hi,

I am posting this on behalf of a friend in the Med, can anyone help please?:

"Are any other owners are experiencing the problems that I am having with the Alternator fixing bolt on my MD 2040. I have a 1997 Moody 36cc and this mounting bolt has now broken off 3 times sometimes with potentially dangerous results.

The lower mounting bolt is a stud fixing resulting in the end of the bolt having to be drilled out from the mounting bracket. This is not easy to explain to Spanish, French or Italian engineers when you don't speak their language.

I hopefully have solved the repair side of things by investing in an adjustable fan belt enabling the engine to be run on a get you to a mooring basis and then a supply of drills and "easy outs" together with a special battery powered drill that will fit in the restricted space.

Have anyone else had these problems and is there a permanent solution?"

The 2040A & 2040B had said ‘problem’ bolt, pn 3580014 btw.

By the time the engine evolved into the later 2040C & 2040D said bolt was still used, only this time the bolt slid through a sleeve, pn 859819 btw and was secured by a nut, pn 950375 btw.

So why did they do that? Cause the bolt on its own weren’t strong enough, and broke!!! Torsional vibration or something along those lines.

Easy enough to resolve the issue, fit the sleeve. Granted, working in available enclosed space makes it an arse of a job, but its straight forward.

That's a very great help, thanks very much for the quick response, I'll pass it on!
What a resource this board is!
Thanks,
Keith

We have experienced exactly the same problem with our 2040. We have a battery drill, easyouts and spare bolts on board. At the moment, we have a stainless bolt which has lasted two seasons in the alternator.

Later engine mounts had a support bracket and a sleeve. I asked if Volvo would like to upgrade my bracket as it was a design fault. I don't know how to type laughter...
