I'm looking at updating the current MD2B engine and am thinking about a freshwater cooled 2003. Whilst not exactly a new engine it has been reconditioned and I'm hoping that it would be a step up from the current 40 year old lump. Does the forum think this is a reasonable idea?

As someone who owns a 20 year old VP 2003, I have had good experiences with this engine, and I know of many others who are the same.

However, it is older technology now, and any used 2003 engine you are considering must be 20 years old at least? If you are going to the trouble and cost to re-engine, would suggest worth going for something much more recent?

I'd go along with that, if you have a boat with a 2003 in it, fine. But if you are going to go the the expense and graft of re-engining, start with something newer surely?

My 2003T is 24 this year and runs well. It's done about 2400 hours. Never been overhauled. They are sound engines, and easy to work on. They all seem to smoke a bit. Weak points are the gearbox drive and the mounting system. However, unless the 2003 you're thinking of is incredibly cheap, it might be worth looking at a newer engine, as West Coast has pointed out. There's a lot of additional bits and pieces needed when you re-engine.
