Hi all

I'm trying to work out an easy way to add a rev counter to a MD2001. Ideally it would be hooked up to an arduino that would then put it out on MMEA 2K

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Probably the easiest way to add a tacho is with a Tiny-Tach™

Why you think it needs to be "hooked up" to all the other cobblers I cannot imagine!

That tiny tach looks good!

The reason for hooking it up to "all the other cobblers" is that if I can build a simple arduino based sensor for under £15 in parts then I can use the existing multifunction displays I have in the cockpit to display the revs, rather than having a separate display, and it would likely be a lot cheaper!

+1 for the Tiny Tach, I've had one for several years. It uses a sensor on an injector pipe; if you want to hook it up to your arduino, they might sell you one. Otherwise, I'd be down to Wickes or somewhere for a tiny magnet and a burglar alarm sensor (I assume they are solid state rather than reed switches these days)

Not sure if this helps but my existing rev counter is a feed from the alternater. It seems to be a built in function.

Most are, but as the OP seems to want a PGN127488 feed into his existing instruments, a direct sensor might be an easier proposition.

I thought about taking the tap from the alternator, but I wasn't sure if the MD2001 alternator had a feed for the tach?

In the case of the Volvo Penta 2001 series engines and the MD2010 series ( not sure which you meant by MD2001) the tacho on the standard Volvo Penta panel is feed from the W terminal of the alternator.

Al least this is what is shown in the wiring diagram in your owners manual

I beleive the 2001 series also has the provision to mount a sensor on the timing gear cover.

Hi Vic, My bad I meant MD2010.

I don't have a tacho on the panel, hence the reason for wanting to add one.

I saw the feed in the owners manual, but as there isn't a tacho on the panel I wasn't sure if this feed was available.

I'd imagine that the wiring loom is the same, whether or not a tacho is fitted. So there should be a thin grey wire attached to the alternator's W terminal.
