Our MD17C is difficult to start from cold, then runs perfectly. It has an automatic cold start function about which I cannot find any info.
Any ideas please?

Likely the thing might be worn a little in terms of compression. Can be checked with a compression check if your fussy or solved by a rebuild but I’d be tempted to run a little 2 stroke through the fuel tank to help the old girl along a little with compression. See if that helps prolong things a little.

IIRC some Volvo cold starts were activated by pulling out the stop button fully and returning it. This moves the injector pump so as to allow exra fuel to be injected, increasing the compression and, hopefully, allowing it to start. Once running, the pump supplies the normal amount of fuel.

I would remove the intake gauze and give it a 1 second squirt of an Eaststart type mixture. Note 1 second - no more. If it lights up, the cold start mechanism may well be knackered.

Dont get into compression problems at this stage. If the above does not help, that may be the way to go.

We had a Gibsea 96 with a high hours VP 2003. The cold start pin on the fuel pump was worn, no cold start. A quick squirt of Easystart at 2/3rds throttle always lit it up. Once running, it behaved as normal.

It is when you need Eaststart when hot, and lots of it, you are in the shit.................................

This does not apply here only suitable instructions for 2001-2003

However the exhaust elbow being blocked is a common problem on most small volvos

I think you need full throttle and the cold start button down to start MD 17C. 2 things to check. 1 remove plate below button and check that when button depressed the rack is moved to allow more diesel to be injected. Sometimes the rack needs lubrication. 2 The manual tells you how to adjust the throttle cable and stop. Agree exhaust back pressure may hinder starting, also blocked air filters. Personally I would avoid easy start. An injection of a small shot of oil into each cylinder will improve the compression if that is the problem.

Cold start button ??? In #1 the OP points out that it has an automatic cold stat function

This is confirmed by the owners manual:

Thanks for all your thoughts.
The interesting one being the exhaust elbow. When the engine was serviced the mechanic said it needed a new elbow as it was getting hot. It could not be done until after the virus and is booked in for ASAP. The mechanic (a Volvo agent) did not know why starting was difficult. How would this affect starting?

I may be wrong but I believe early MD 17’s had the same arrangement as in MD11 above. I know the MD17 D has automatic cold start because our boat has one, but they have different injectors to the MD 17C. The series had continuous 7development over many years. I had boats with MD 1, MD2B engines in as well. If regularly serviced, particularly regular oil changes, and water pump seals watched for leaking they are long lasting reliable engines.

The "snip" is from the owners manual for the MD11C and MD17C

The OP seems to
