Volvo MD11D leaking inspection plate

Hi I just thought I would let you know how I am getting on with my old engine.

Last weekend I found a two small holes in the inspection plate which might go some way to explain why I am loosing lots of oil. The holes are only about a matchstick diameter and a needle respectively.


I thought i could get a replacement cover but spent the week finding out that they are not made and in are not easy to find second hand.

Undeterred i decided to spend today removing the plate for a possible braising repair. However after 6 hours i only managed 3 of the 6 bolts as the allen bolts are totally corroded and I really can't get them out. (I used about 3 different mole grips and even tried cutting a slot in the bolt to use a screwdriver). My only option now is trying one of those little wrenches that grip as you turn, however the bolt is recessed but I will look into buying one this week!

In despair I used two self tapping screw and screwed them into the holes hoping that will sort it out for a bit so at least I can go sailing and i can check where else it is leaking.

Any advice would be appreciated

Hi

I've used these before and they do work. You drill a small hole in the centre of the stud and screw the tool into the hole with a tap wrench. They have a left hand thread and grip into the hole as you unscrew it.

This might work too, here but Ive not used one.

Is it the con rod inspection cover on the left hand side of the engine? Could you make a new one out of flat plate?

Those look useful, I have used the screw in one before, a long time ago and I had forgotten about that. I am not sure I could get a drill in the space. The other one also looks like it might work, I might try to find one in a local shop to have a good look at it, as it's quite expensive. Thanks

The plate is on the left if the flywheel is in front of you but it isn't flat it has a raised section which makes it even harder to get at.
