Does anyone know if there is a standard (auto) part that will replace the Volvo one, and if so what make/part number it might be, or alternatively a cheap supplier?

Don't know of an auto part
Keypart 01923 330570 do a thermostat kit for about £23 + VAT assuming its sea water cooled

Don't use a car type thermostat if your engine is seawater cooled as seawater cooled engines run at a much lower temperature. Running at car engine temperatures will dramatically increase the scaling rate and corrosion.
I'm sure there are alternative and suppliers but make sure you get one rated at the correct temperature for a seawater cooled engine. Seriously even if you have to pay Volvo price you should not have to buy so many in the course of 10 years say that it will put a big strain on your boating budget.
If your enine is indirectly cooled then it should be easy to find an alternative.
