Hi, does anyone have a exhaust for Volvo MD7 and best place to purchase connecting hose?

I am also after a main sail boom for a Westerly Griffon 1980 model?

Exhaust elbows have a short lifespan, and are expensive. Years ago, I bought one for my MD7A from a regular dealer, and had a long wait before it arrived. Later, I found out that a chap in Sweden makes repros in SS, at a tad less than the 'genuine cast-iron' ones. I would expect them to last longer, but this may not be necessarily so.

Maybe this is something similar:

For the exhaust hose, I went to a farm tractors' workshop.

Will.

Looks very similar to my old MD5 exhaust. I filed the hole out square back to good metal and cut a piece of thick mild steel plate to fit the hole. I tapped it into place and had a good welder do a MIG weld on it. The cast iron seemed to weld OK and it lasted over 10 years.

If you are going to run an old engine like this it's a good idea to get used to repairing parts where possible. Most of the parts are very heavily built but, assuming it's a raw water cooled version, there will be quite a lot of corrosion over the years. The hole in the elbow is likely to be where the cooling water and exhaust gas meet. A new one may not last any longer than a repaired one. The repair I did was invisible when dressed back but for a belt and braces approach it could also be patched over the outside. Some other repairs I did on the MD5 were on the head where some of the waterways are very close to the cylinder wall. I had some erosion repaired by welding before skimming. Last time I priced a new head it was a non starter. The other area which seemed prone to corrosion was the water pump housing and aluminium geargox adaptor again easily restored using metal filled epoxy. With a bit of TLC these engines can be kept running reliably for a long time but buying new parts is prohibitively expensive.

buy a new exhaust elbow and hose, the only way to be sure you have a safe installation...elbow around £100.

Indeed. Welding on an outside plate is not enough, as invariably the inner separation wall has corroded away, increasing the risk of flooding the engine of you got starting problems as well.

Always found them very helpfull and usually comes next day, our MD7b just kept going, great engines so why not treat it to the proper parts, sure it will pay dividends :)

Hi Nick, if you cannot find a second hand boom speak to spar companies that may have second booms, small scratches or dents cannot be sold as new but may be sold cheaper, the gooseneck willl be the problem but easy to change to a fixed one. Sailspar or Z Spar may be worth a call. I think Z Spar use the Z160 section 94 x 68 for the Westerly Griffon although best to check with them!
