depends which gearbox you have
ms box earlier type which is normally green with a small oil filler plug has a cooler which is a cast iron unit and includes the reuction gear casing which can crack either with frost or a a result of external damage.

the later boxes which have a large black filler and are normally painted white have a oil cooller in the form of a copper coil and are not so liable to frost so it may only be seals that are required

Many thanks for prompt reply, going by your description my box has the large black oil filler but is green assuming it is as you specify is the remedy do- able in situ. If it is not the seals can the coil also be replaced in situ,if this is the case then today will not seem so bad. thanks again

sorry but i think that you will have to remove box
to get at the oil cooler you have to remove the prop shaft coupling by the time you do this you would be as well to remove the gearbox as working on the end of it in the bilge is not really advisable
you would have to take the end assembly of the box in any case so i would suggest removing the box
how much oil is in the oil
has the level risen or is there just contamination
if the oil does not look too bad you could try changing it and the seals to the water connection which is on the back of the box
have you run a mains hose to the engine if so that could be a cause
