Hi
On the one I bought for my MD11C from MMS a while ago ( now Nauticalia or something ) it said Motorad on it and 60, which I assume refers to the opening temp. By the looks of it I reckon you could buy the same in Halfords or any motor spares shop.

The problem with car thermostats is that they open at a higher temperature than raw water thermostats - typically around 85 - 90 (from memory). I suspect the 60 marked on yours is the opening temperature. You won't find a 60degree thermostat in Halfords, unfortunately.

Have you tried Keypart in Watford? Their prices are usually quite a bit less extortionate than Volvo

The thermostat on this engine as it opens to let cooling water around the engine shuts off the bypass on the end of the manifold where the thermostat is located. you should notice it is a lot deeper in depth than a car type thermostat.

If you fit a car type thermostat it would not have this function so most of the cooling water would still bypass the engine.

The 60 is the opening temperature as the engine is raw water cooled.

The bypass hole is only 4m/m presumably to stop the raw water pump dead ending before the thermostat opens. Most of the water still goes to the engine.
