Ive got a small coolant seepage from my starboard head gasket, not the end of the world but id rather get it done sooner than later, anybody with marine engineering knowledge any idea how long it should take to replace, Ad41b 200hp turbo, i think V**** are taking the p***.

Not that I'm remotely an expert but I would have though one days work for an experienced bloke + materials? What do Volvo want?

Mermaid did my head gasket (6 cylinder) 2 blokes took about 4-5 hours, can't see why Volvo should be much different.

As aguide, Espar at Harleyford - Old MMS building charge 45 quid per hour, but you can haggle a bit.

I should think you'll be looking at an invoice for circa 16hrs labour at what ever the hourly rate is of the people doing the work.

Suspect an hourly rate of £40 odd per hour plus Vat.

Total labour charge approx £750.00 inc Vat.

Should imagine a head gasket on its own is about £40.00 plus Vat or a head gasket set is about £100 plus Vat.

What car do you drive??? Merc, Volvo, BMW, Jag etc etc will all no doubt charge more like £100 plus per hour. Ford, Pug, Citroen, Vauxhall, Seat etc etc are probarly good for £60 odd per hour.....

3 Hours at £75 =£225.00. Head gasket set sourced via a rebore company £100
Total £325.00 May be a couple of bits like antifreeze top up oil. I have had the heads of my TAMD60b in 1 hour so I think that my "guestimate" is fair excepting access etc.

Don't know what the "book" says. I took the head off my engine which is a volvo petrol. Had it skimmed, new valve seats and valves, cam set up (I'm buggered if i'm measuring the gaps and then re shimming) and they supplied new head set. Took me about an hour to get it off and probably hour and a half to refit and run it up. Total cost £200.

Thats using an engineering firm that I've used for years and know pretty well and trust the work. Do you have to go to a Volvo dealer to get it done. Have a hunt around and see if you can find an independant chap who'll not have the big overheads of the main dealers. Maybe the man and van mobile type of spanner chap.

he we go :quotes for total job inc full gasket set and coolant.
main dealer burlsden southampton :£35.50 per hour total cost £980.00 +vat
main dealer Hamble southampton:£32.00 per hour total cost £1010.79 +vat
main dealer portsmouth:£39.50 per hour total cost £770.00 +vat

the dealer furthest away as boat is at hamble(all dealers were inform of location) highest labour rate is the cheapest.
nearest dealer lowest labour rate is the dearest.
what is going on with this industry??????????

Can't see how they've worked their prices out. If all of them are Volvo main dealers then the cost of the parts should'nt vary. Nor come to that, should the labour costs. Get them to break down the quotes into labour and parts. It'll be interesting to see what each of them are charging and if they are all using the same parts.

Friend of mine who diagnosed the problem with the help of his self employed marine engineer friend has just given me a quote(his engineer friend that is not him) just over a grand plus parts plus vat and he`s not a main dealer.

Taking the piss springs to mind. A 1000 quid for less than a days work. Even if you take into account that parts will be a portion of the cost, which can be no more than 300 quid tops, its still taking the piss. Doe's the work have to be carried out by a main dealer for warrenty and such like or is it out of it.

Will the head need skimming at all, do you know what has caused it to leak coolant and where its l;eaking to?

no out of warranty 10 years old dont know if head needs skimming, slight seep just started to happen, leaks from behind oil cooler and drips into bilge.

Re: Sod that

I'll apply a tin of Radweld for you for only £650+VAT...

Are you positive its the head, and not the oil cooler?? you could also try to re -torque the head, both considerably cheaper options.
alternatively fetch the boat round to Swansea and labour charges will only be £30.00 ph. +vat or £25.00 per hour( no vat) with new guy who is just starting up!!

julian!

man made it ,man can repair it, i think??

It's amazing the different labour rates isn't it. I had the cone clutch renewed on the outdrive by the Volvo dealer at Blaydon who charged a very reasoanble £17.30 per hour + VAT. Bring yer boat to Geordieland!!
