Good afternoon,

Both the 20 years old keyswitches are showing the same problem - anti-clockwise to turn off does not always work. I've only got one gold mine, so can anyone suggest a suitable replacement?

TIA,

John G

Hi John,

Hopefully one of the Volvo guys on these threads will pick up on this......

I have AD41 engines and one of them sometimes does not stop running when I turn the key anti-clockwise. As far as I am aware, this is not a problem with the ignition (key) but with the 'stop' solenoid in the engine which can stick. Mine is never usually a problem when the engine is hot, only when I start and try to stop it when it's cold. When this happens it is a case of lifting the engine cover and manually stopping it.

Of course, whenever my mechanic is on board it works perfectly!

I have asked him whether it is worth changing the solenoid but I don't think it's that cheap, especially if you don't have the skills to do it yourself (which is my problem). Of course, if yours has failed completely, you don't have much choice.

As mentioned earlier, hopefully one of the many Volvo specialists on this forum will respond and probably say I am completely wrong!

Cheers,

Joe

Many thanks to Mad_Boater & doubly so to Joe. The problem occurs with both switches [one engine] so the solenoid looks a likely candidate. Boat is far away so I shall not be able to reach any conclusion in the near future.

Intermittent faults are a pain in the fundament & the price of a new solenoid lists @ 388 euros, if a replacement is necessary I think it likely that one could be found for considerably less. If brain permits I'll keep you informed!

Check the locking nut on the solenoid activating rod, it may have come loose, if so you can screw it in/out to make it operate properly, will be obvious when you look at it.

I have 20 year plus AQUAD 41As in my Sealine. This problem happens now and again on one engine.I have found that by turning the key slowly to the off position usually works. If I turn it quickly sometimes the engine does not stop.
