Volvo KAMD42\'s

Hi all. I'm looking at a boat with a pair of the above engines in, 1993 vintage. Are there any known weaknesses of this particular model that I should look out for, and any service items or tasks that are particular to this model over and above what is 'normal' for a turbo-charged marine engine? Thanks in advance.....

Yes the early models had problems with the piston oil cooling jets, they were modified, so check these engines have had the recall done. Also the head gaskets leaked coolant down the side of the block, and the gasket between the turbo and manifold has been modified due to coolant leaks so visually inspect for leakage, they should have been changed under recall. Also check they have a service history as its important that the valve clearance are adjusted every 200
hours. Apart from that check for leaks, seawater, oil etc, and that they achieve the rated 3,800 rpm, I guess they are on drives so they should be checked for damage, prop strikes, water in the oil.
Servicing is very straighforward otherwise, shouldn't take more than a couple of hours for each motor, although I know the dealer will charge for more!
