We've just aquired a Sealine S28 and the engines are due for service. I intend to do them myself.
Previous threads on this Forum have been very helpful with references to equivalent filters, belts and so on, but I have two questions which don't seem to have been covered.

What is the base engine from which the Kad32 was developed, or is it a dedicated marine design?

Where can I get an overhaul manual, not too dear?

I expect I'll think of one or two more as the work progresses!

I was under the impression it was a purpose built marine engine and isn't a marinised car/truck lump.

could be wrong of course /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Most things that you'd want to do yourself are covered in the operators manual which can be downloaded free from HERE.

KAD32 is a purpose built marine engine, derived from the following:

AQAD30A - 110hp 1983
AQAD31A - 130hp 1986
Various versions of AD31, 130/150hp 1986-2004
KAD32 - 170hp 1996-2005

Incidentally, good choice of boat /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hi
Good choice of boat, I have a 2001 model since new, just coming up to 850 hours on the engines. What area will you be boating in? PM on the way to you

Regards

Steve

AQAD30A

Does anyone know if the AQAD30a is a purpose built marine unit or is it used in other commercial applications. I need to get the injectors replaced or rebuilt at reasonable cost.
I also have a rattle on the engine that sounds like pinking, the injector pump timing has been checked would the water pump make this sort of noise if it's worn?

Regards

This and many others is purely a marine derived engine thats why they are generally so good, ie power to weight ratio, hp per litre etc, they have the correct camshaft profile set and rpm duty cycle, marinsed commercial engines cannot compete without many mods against the true designed marine application engine.

I can supply you non genuine filters at 2 thirds the price of genuine volvo penta filters.

Hi Paul,

Proof that you certainly have attended VP courses!

The truth is that Volvo needed an engine to slot in below the 5.4 litre 60 Series for their F range of trucks in the 1970's. They were using hotch potch of Perkins engines and gasoline motors and were desparate to get Perkins out of the product line.

To justify investment in the Vara engine plant the 90x92 mm four and six cylinder engine range, the 30 and 40 Series volume was shared with VP. Volvo dumped Perkins in 1978 started using the TD40A in F4 and later the FL4 trucks.

The 40 Series proved to be a far better marine motor than a truck motor, probably due to the oversquare design which was in vogue for diesels in the 1970's, and was dropped from the truck range in 1989.

Volvo struggled with a replacement for the FL4 until they introduced the FLC around 1996, with guess what a Perkins engine!
