I have some experience of diesel engine maintenance and tried to change the engine oil on my Volvo KAD32 today. I bought an oil scavenger pump (as suggested in the Volvo manual) in order to suck oil through the dip stick hole.

The nylon pipe supplied with the Vetus pump is about 6mm in diameter but would not go all the way down to the bottom the dipstick tube - hence only a tiny amount of oil could be sucked out.

Am I doing anyhting wrong or do I just need a smaller diameter pipe - if so what size is recommended and can anyone tell me where to get one.

I've just measured mine(!), and it's approx 6mm diameter. I rounded off the end a bit to make sure it didn't get stuck, and cut the bottom at a slight angle.

You should be able to hear the "twang" as it hits the bottom of the sump.

The oil only comes out when very warm...

Chaged oil on a Volvo Today.
TAMD 30A.
Got a "Pella" type vacuum sucker.
Ran the eng for at least half an hour.
In fact You are better going out for a Spin and getting the eng up to working temperature before You attempt to change the oil.
On some Volvos there is a separate "sucker point" (I think it is when you go to buy the eng, don,t like the green twats!) on tother side to the dipstick.
This goes clear down to the sump. So all can be decanted.
So-- stick the thinnest pip You can down the orofice to make sure You go as low as You can.
Make sure the oil is Hot. Not hot to burn You but hottish.
No good if it is cool.
Old oil can be quite thick and You won,t suck it up!
I sucked all My oil out today to find the oil filter supplier had given Me the wrong filter!
Did query at the time but was told there had been a part No. change and this was the right bit!
Bollocks, so now I have to do it again, tiss messy too!
So stick Your tube right up Your chuffer!
I mean dipstick hole or other hole provided!
Measure what comes out.
If this is near what the eng holds well thats it.
Don,t forget the oil filter will hold some as well.
So whatever the Manual says, if You have got one?
Don't forget the amount the oil filt will hold.

Plus get a thiinner tube to go down to the bottom and join it up towards the sucker pump if You Know what I mean!
What type of sucker pump are You using?

Hi
See this recent post
The engine oil needs to be really hot and you need a good vacuum pump. Not the little hand held jobby that I was going to use. On forum advice bought the Seago globy sort of pump which worked fine but took quite some time to suck out the oil. The dia of the tube was 6mm. You can get this vacuum pump from any chandlery
