I have the above fitted to a D2-55. All was well when the engine was last run in November since when the engine battery has been off though continually above 12.6v, currently at 13.7v on shore power. Now, when I turn on the panel "Volvo Penta" appears for about 3 seconds in the tacho LCD then the panel goes blank (normally there is a bleep and engine hours are displayed) though I can start the engine from the panel but the tacho doesn't move and the alternators don't provide charge. Any ideas on where to start looking?
Does the EVC have an internal battery which may have become discharged? I had this sort of problem with a Navtex when left off power for several months

It's this panel:

Bumping this as more facts have come to light...plus some advice would be really welcome.
It's been suggested that the tacho (p/n VP 21 628 167) is at fault. Is there a means of testing it without specialist kit? I've broken and remade the connections at the ECU and the tacho which all seem clean. Also checked the fuse in the ECU.
The empty port at the top of pic 3 is a bit concerning. Is it possible a cable has detached from this? I can't see a loose end in the steering pedestal and it is a major job to access it fully. Again, any advice would be most welcome.

As far as I’m aware the EVC is a solid state sealed unit with no internal battery. Have you checked the EVC connection at the “black box” on the side of the engine? There are lots of stories around of relay failures inside the black box leaving the EVC unable to start the engine. I fitted a manual switch which allows me to bypass the EVC and start the engine without having to resort to reaching hard to reach starter motor terminals in a hurry. I realise that you can still start the engine using the EVC so maybe this won’t help in your case.

I posted last week for advice as My tacho on my D1 20 is faulty. I wonder if there is a batch of faulty one mine is late 2012.

The tacho will not stop the alternator charging, but the alternator makes the tacho work. That doesn't entirely account for the lack of hours display, but i'd start by looking at the negative connections to the alternator. Any negative connections to the block should be removed, cleaned, replaced, etc.

I have checked the alternator wiring but as I have two it seems unlikely they'd fail simultaneously.

Dunno about the tacho but I've found this which includes my engine SN in the applicable range though Volvo say it's not relevant to my specific engine

Thanks. You've had no charging problems bypassing the MDI box? have checked its fuse and connectors and they all seem good.
