My SIL, has bit the bullet & is buying a Moody 31, currently in Gosport.

The current owner, has only had the boat a very short time (getting divorced) & previous owner has shed his mortal coil, but seemed to take some care with the boat whilst alive. Boat has not been heavily used.
During discussions with the broker, the question of the engine arose & several options have been suggested.

This is one reply from a dealer

"Thank you for the email and email with information of service/ work carried out, I can see from the service history that this vessel hasn’t had the best of service, the Volvo invoices are for none service items the knowing XYZ marine they would possibly have obtained genuine Volvo parts but they are not Volvo engineers and ABC marine have used none genuine parts completely.

With this in mind and we have never had any dealing with this vessel I would strongly suggest a full major service using genuine Volvo parts and engineers.

Please find below what we could be doing for you as a Volvo super centre,

1, carry out an engine inspection at Gosport £53-£424 the range is from visual inspection to full inspection and sea trial with oil analysis.

2, Full bi annual service as listed below

I have a Moody 31 and a Volvo 2003. Most people use alternative fuel and oil filters. These engines are very common and unsophisticated - any engineer worth his salt can deal with them. Filters area simple diy job. The fuel bleed screw is on top of the filter housing. Oil is another rip-off. Mineral oil 20-50w about £10 for 5 litres at my local car spares place.

Get someone to look it over, make sure the mounts are OK and that the exhaust elbow hasn't blown. Basic service unless it sounds like a can of nails.

Find an engineer who will do a survey for you.

If that is OK, find a good engineer who will service the engine, this need not be a Volvo engineer, and get a price for a full service.

Consider the findings of the survey and the price full service, at Volvo prices, and adjust your offer accordingly.

The fact that engine has not been heavily used is not necessarily a good sign. I imagine the engine is a 2002 and it would be better if fresh water cooled.

The prices seem to my non-specialist eyes to be fairly normal but there is a large potential bill with the saildrive diaphragm change. Personally, as a non-engineer, I would want to start off with the knowledge that my engine had been fully sorted out and would be looking to negotiate with the seller about the cost of this. Much of the work on these engines is within the ability of many competent owners but it depends on your SIL's abilities how much he wants to undertake himself.

The standard engine is a 2003 and they are all shaft driven not saildrive. Many were raw water cooled but I guess that a large number have been coverted to fresh water cooling (as was mine). Volvo do a kit for that.

When I bought mine there were some obvious issues with the engine and having all of those sorted by an Volvo engineer at the vendor's expense was part of the deal when I made an offer.

Have a word with VolvoPaul over on the mobo forum. He services loads of the boats on the forum, is a good bloke and will also go out with you on the seatrial and stick his head down the engine bay at full throttle - and that will let you know what is happening!

If it starts quickly, and runs well with no excess smoke , knocking, or vibration, then it's almost certain to be fine. Clock it into forwards and reverse on the pontoon and give it a minute under load against the warps.

No matter what its service history, you should do a full service on it when you get it anyway (and do it yourself so you get to know the engine).

+1 for Volvo Paul. We have used him a couple of times, did a great job, Volvo specialist, very reasonable. Boat at swanwick so just up the road.

Plus one on the above . The only thing I would add is to run it at full throttle for at least 10 minutes on the sea trial and observe the temp. and oil pressure gauges closely. A small rise in temp is OK but it should stabilize, the oil pressure should NOT drop although on idle a slightly lower pressure than before is acceptable. Some smoke is acceptable. Getting an experienced diesel spanner monkey to stick his head into the engine compartment and listen to the engine at speed under load is a very good investment.

I have a moody 31, great boats and the volvo is pretty much bomb proof, non volvo serviceable items are used commonly and no cause for any concern. Enjoy. Oh and join the moody owners assoc as has already been mentioned it's an excellent resource.

Thanks. I was a bit surprised to see saildrive in the OP but I supposed the engineers were just listing all their services. I'm also surprised to see that the 31 has the 2003. That must just about get them on the plane with a decent prop!

It's 28HP with a fixed two-blade prop. At easy cruising revs around 2000 that will get me 5.5knots in flat water no tide (only really achieved in Holland!). A Bruntons for an extra knot would be nice!

Perhaps you were thinking it was the turbo version of that engine.

Surprised at the speed you get at those revs, my 31 bilge keel at 2000rpm is well over 6 knots no matter the weather (within reason), I rarely run it above 1850 revs as that gives me the 6 knots, I guess it's just down to different pitch of the propellor mine is also a fixed 2 blade. If you really wind the engine up the stern wave is quite something to behold!

This is it (broker details) -

"Volvo Penta model 2003 28hp diesel engine. Serviced 2012"

also evidence of invoice for a Kiwi Prop.

Another vote for VolvoPaul of this Parish. He has done our engine service. Lots of recommendations on YBW for him.
