I remember seeing a chart from volvo that gave estimated top speeds acheivable for engine/drive/prop combos? Might have even been on here but a search has turned up nowt.
I can't remember exactly what you said, but if you have the KAD43's attached to KAD32 outdrives, you'll need to use the row for the KAD32 with the 1.95:1 ratio.
A C6 is going to work if the engines+boat will pull 37/38 kts, which sounds about right to me.
B6's, but have been advised not to go for Ally props with the KAD 43 (or 42,44,300's either for that matter). Not really bothered by top end at all, but would like to run around at 28-30knts without the engines revving off the scale. I reckon 2800 - 3000 rpm should give a decent turn of speed. Don't want to get there too quickly after all.
>but have been advised not to go for Ally props
The paint comes off, and you end up with cavitation pits if you use the full welly of the bigger engines with ally props.
In speed terms, the direct equivalent of B6's would be C4's, but that will be max 34/35kts and puts your cruise at somewhere around 26kts. Not 28-30kts.
Stepping up to C5's will give you the cruise speed you're after, top speed estimated 37/38kts SO LONG AS you can still hit 3900rpms flat out. Otherwise all you end up doing is being still stuck with a top speed at 34/35kts producing the same power but forcing the engine to do it at lower revs, which is overloading, and not good.
Poking around a bit, I've found a Bav330 with the bigger KAD44's claiming 39kts. That's a different drive ratio, but probably also on C5's. So maybe 37/38 isn't an unreasonable target with the KAD43's, and the bigger C5's are probably worth a shot.
I think the C6's will be too big.
If it were me, and I was going to moderately loaded most of the time (e.g. Fuel plus water plus 2 or 3 people) I would probably go for the C5's. But please don't blame me if it goes pear shaped. I'm just interpreting the figures, I've never actually tried these props on a 330!
Any other opinions? Please?
dv.
(not wanting to be solely responsible for Jez having a tag line that says:
Wanted: set of C6 props
For Sale: Immaculate set of C5 props
PS: that dv is a bl**dy idiot)
Well, you may be right. I have spoken to Coastal Rides, Steel Developements, Peters and our own Col. Peters decided not ot give any advice othr than a new set of SS props was £845 + VAT. Coastal Rides reckon a set of C5 or C6 would suit, and then tried to sell me a set of C7's. Col reckons C6's would be preferable to C5's having been on the boat.
Anyway, it is all a bit of a mute point as I have bought a set of props today (hence the change in signature - somebody find a home for my C2's please). Recon C6's, £400/set.
I'll try them, hopefully they should be ok, but I will permit an 'I told you so' if they aren't.
BTW, I felt sure you said you had C6's on FP? Maybe I was wrong or speaking to someone else or just made it up.
Nope, I have A6's on an outdrive with a lower gear ratio, hence top speed around 34kts, cruise around 24kts.
If the engines aren't man enough to push the C6's, just get Col to break the seal on the injection pump and wind it up a bit /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
The C6's should be okay so long as you're not trying to run at high speed fully loaded in rough seas. Twill be interesting to see, but at least at £400/set you could easily re-sell them for the same money.
Yes, Col did mention over a gin or two in Greece that if I wanted he could quite easily get the 43's to produce 250hp, or a bit more. Think he is planning on doing something similar to his new KAD 42's.
At least I remembered you had something 6 sized props!
