Having previously decided to move away from power we are now, for various reasons, looking at sports cruisers again. Plan is to spend most time on rivers with occasional sea trips so fuel not the consideration it was.

We are thinking of avoiding KAD 44 & 300 due to reported lubrication problems at low revs and a boat type we are considering have AD41's, D4 260 and D6 310 engines. Now I know AD41's and like the simplicity, robustness and ability to maintain myself but on a 38 foot boat performance may not be sparkling but probably adequate for my intended usage.

Thing is I know very little about the D4 and D6 engines so would welcomes any thoughts/information from the forum. Are they reliable or are my prejudices about electronics and over complicated engines accurate?

Would I be better going for the newer engines for better re-sale perhaps? Are the newer engines okay on the rivers? Does the old adage of going for the bigger option (i.e. the D6) still apply? Price is a big consideration of course and it maybe we can only afford the smaller option.

All information will be gratefully received.

Although many here will say how reliable the AD41 is, it is getting to the stage where some parts are going out of production, and this is only going to get worse as time goes on. D4/D6 are smoother, quieter, better economy, fewer emissions, etc.

Main issues with D4/D6 are around the DPH outdrives, which have a history of steering ram failures, hoses failing, early props corroding. Latest steering ram design might be better, but they are still external, which is a very strange design decision.

I agree with Flowerpower. If the boat is to be on outdrives then just as much consideration needs to be given to the drives. The DPH drives will cost much more to service and the steering ram problems have by no means been resolved.

Thanks guys. Just been reading a long post earlier this year on the DPH steering ram problems. Seems quite extraordinary that VP could make such a schoolboy design error and very disappointing that they don't seem to accept there is a problem.

As we will be mainly in fresh water I am wondering if the rams might be okay as there won't be any fouling??
