The engine hours LCD on the instrument panel of my Volvo Penta 2020 went blank at the weekend. I need to go pot-holing down the bottom of the cockpit locker in daylight to double check it isn't a loose connector somewhere - but has anyone else experienced the same problem and if it is a failure of the LCD display, is it repairable? Thanks...

Its a common fault and nothing to do with the connections, its caused by dampness getting into the instrument. pull it out and leave in the airing cupboard for a couple of days and it should work again.

Spannerman gave you the answer. However, from my experience this is only a temporary fix. I tried to source the LCDs but was tols by VDO that they are not allowed to sell tehm due to their contract with VP !! In the end I fitted a mechanical unit down below driven by the alternator Aux output and gave up with the VP one.

As already said this is a really common fault.

Alan.

Don't bother removing it!

Ours goes blank sometime in October each year and pops back in April, so our logs are conspicuous by lack of engine hours during the winter months.

If you need to restore it temporarily use gentle heat from hairdrier etc

At least in my case, it's only the display which does not work: the counter keeps counting, so every now and then, when it's in the mood of showing its numbers, I can check if they are consistent with the hours I logged the old fashioned way (on paper). /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
