Hoping someone can give me some inspiration on a fuel problem.

After changing a seal in the regulation system on my VP2040, and replacing a lift pump and a fuel filter head as i had seemed to of acquired a crack in one of the threads that opened out when tightening.

I now have generated at fuel problem. The engine will start if you manually fill the fuel filter up and crack an injector and will run quite happily for 10 Min's or so (although the idle does need a tweak). Once you stop the engine and try and start the engine again it seems all the fuel has disappeared from the fuel filter and the system and run back down in to the tank. So the engine won't start.

There doesnt seem to be a blockage in the tank (although it does need a clean) as you can blow into the tank and hear the fuel. but there seems to be some resistance in trying to suck the fuel up.

Any bright ideas on what it could be, could a blocked fuel tank breather cause this problem ? As the fuel seems to flow round the rest of the system okay.

TIA

Sounds like the fuel pump has a leaky non-return valve allowing fuel to drain back to the tank when the engine is shut down. If no non-return valve is fitted, the parts you changed are not seated properly.

I would not have thought an air leak had been created since you would see diesel leaks whilst running.

Not if the airleak was between the lift pump and the tank. The primary filter is a good source of air leaks and you might find it by lightly pressuring the fuel tank...By lightly pressuring I mean human blow power .. Most of your ooomph will go out the breather but maybe enough will cause wetness at the leak.

Volvo filters fitted with non volvo elements can leak due to slight differences in dimensions requiring that an extra whitemetal washer might be needed under the central bolthead to stop the bolt becoming thread bound before nipping the seals.

Thanks Piers,,,,,,Been there myself so beware some third party or even CAV elements in Volvo filters unless you have a 5mm washer handy.

Having to refill the fuel filter continuously is very sumptomatic of a blocked vent on the fuel tank. The engines runs until it uses the fuel in the filter and then stops!

Assuming you have already eliminated the suggestions above.
Check you haven't inadvertantly swapped the banjo bolts over.
