I've just got 2 quotes for a 200 hour service for my Volvo D6 IPS 500's and they are a long way apart at US$3,500 AND US$5,400.I was expecting around the 2k mark.Does anyone here have the D6's and what would be a good price to pay.

Is this a job i could do myself or do you need Volvo tools/software to speak to the ECU?

Does it specifically need Volvo oil/filters or do other brands work just as well?

Cheers

How long is warranty in Australia?

If the boat is still under warranty get it fully serviced within the warranty period by a Volvo Penta dealer who is fully familiar with IPS and get a thorough inspection of the engine and drive system undertaken at the same time including a lift out and drive insepection, some had problems with prop corrosion.

You need the Volvo Penta Vodia tool to talk to the engines and to down load and error reports.

Either way you have some very epensive engines and drives and if I was in Your your shoes I would use a VP Dealer.

Have you got joystick control?

a 200hr service on my Volvo D3s with Outdrives is about 2000$,
so I think you have one reasonably good quote for your bigger and more complicated setup.

as mentioned before, I would alway's use an experienced VP IPS dealer,
they might know or think of tiny small things coming up that you don't notice, but that could ruin your holliday imho.

You really need Volvopaul in here, as I understand it IPS units require servicing by people who have had appropriate training. Also IPS units require some very special and expensive lube oils.

As far as I am aware Volvo D6 has, as yet no aftermarket filter applications from Baldwin, Donalson, Fleetguard etc.

Thanks for the great replies. The engines are out of warranty and i would prefer Volvo to service it if the Volvo software is required,i guess they have us over a barrel in that re$pect.Yes,i have the Joystick.

The Volvo dealer who quoted $3,500 said he'd need it for 2 days,so i guess there's a fair bit of work involved and he said the IPS drives need 6 anodes per side.

Just thought i'd run it by you guys, great forum by the way:D

The IPS needs two anodes per side there is an aluminium anode on the transom and a cast iron (I think) in the exhaust. Please use genuine Volvo anodes as the IPS units need it. Also make sure that there is no water in the gap Inside the boat where the IPS unit is electricaly isolated from the rest of the boat.
The Vodia tool is not needed for a streight forward 200hr service if there are no faults.
I can't remember what we charge for a service but I think 2000 to 2500 for a proper service including a engine room clean and sea trial.
Volvo also recomend that the IPS drives are cleaned and painted with propspeed (expensive stuff)

hope this helps

The d6 engines are straightforward service routine but as yet there are no aftermarket filters available, there wont be as volvo dont permit other manufacturers to produce until the product has been out for 10 years from launch date.

IPS drives on the other hand are complicated, look them up on volvos site or marinepartseurope.com and see the stip down of the unit! frightening.

They hold 14 litres of volvos very expensive fully synthetic gear oil per drive, then there is all the other parts, oil filter and anodes etc.

Dealers over here charge in the thousands for servicing, though I have charged around £1200 ish for both engines using genuine filters and recomended after market oils if the boats within a reasonable range from my southcoast base.

You are working too cheaply Volvopaul, here in Norway we charge £1300 per motor and drive.
And really they are one of the easiest engines to service, I use 2 1/2hrs tops to change ALL filters, zincs, impellor, belts and oil, and 1 1/2hr for a drive off new bellows, zincs and oil. so very comfortably in 4 1/2 hrs with T breaks which is less than the time allowed for just the engine.
The dealers are making a fortune on these services. 5 hrs motor 3 hrs drive plus parts.

I just received my 3rd quote which comes to US$6,411.

So that's $3,500-$5,400 and $6,400.I wonder if they are all quoting the same job and will the cheapest include all that the dearest included.I will list it here and see what you guys think.According to my owners manual, the impellers aren't supposed to be changed at 200 hours.

Carry all service equipment down to vessel.

and air filters.
Replace engine anodes.

Replace both impellers.
Refit pumps back on engines.
Refit belts back on engines.
Bleed up fuel systems.
Replace oil, 22ltrs per engine.
Clean water strainers.
Run Vodia engine check over engines and drives.
Drain and re-fill IPS gear oil.
Remove and replace IPS anodes.
Run and check engines.
Pack up tools and equipment.
Return to workshop.

Total Labour $1,200

Parts Total $2,379.

Haul out,antifoul and materials $1,800

Grand Total $6,411

My manual states 200 hour service is engine oil, drive oil, filters, check impeller.

I understand that this is a 600k vessel but i just want to pay what's fair, not double.

Cheers
Jack

Someone can't add up total above comes to $5,379.

I'd suggest the first quote is parts and labour only, haulout and antifoul cost will be added later, second quote includes haulout and antifoul, third quote is a mistake or just added $1000 on hoping the rich git won't notice:D

I agree you can do these in the times you say above but a lot also depends on access to the engines and how much of the boat you have to dismantle first and how far the boat is from the van
And how much diesel you spill when removing fuel filter as they not the easiest to put a pot under

Or the extra $1000 could be Aussie equivalent of Sales Tax/VAT as the rest of the quote is net. It is almost 20%.

The other quote for $3.5K obviously can't include the liftout/antifouling - just the engine service.

Your dead right, access is everything, that anode at the back of the intercooler can be a b**gg*r to get to in some boats, I don't find the diesel filter too much of a problem, I put a few big rags under it and providing the dipstick tube and diesel hose aren't too close together I can get it out with out any spillage.
