Hello fellow sailors.
Im in Iceland and friend of mine has this Volvo D6 310 hp model 2005 and has a very bad problem with the coolant pump, that is he has 3 times replaced the pump and after some time appr 4 months it starts to leak so now he putting OME pump number 4 to the engine!
Any addvice???
Thanks hope some one has some answers...

Is there a shaft seal(s) ?,If so , was that part(s) replaced ?
Unfamiliar with the exact set up but going from first principles , there should be a seal to hold the water in presumably that comes with the pump .If it’s driven from the engine another possibility separate seal ( that does not come with the pump ) that keeps the oil in .That shaft might be damaged , so after a few months of so it’new seal leaks . Maybe that shaft is worn and not quite true ?

Or the shafts ok but the new seal is ambiguous in its direction of fit and has been fitted the wrong way round ? Leak would show up pretty soon in this case .

3/4 pumps seems operator error somewhere or a knackered shaft out of alignment or a victim of corrosion a bit which eventually busts a new seal .

I have not seen the schematics, but if there is a belt somewhere then over tightened a belt can knacker bearings and possibly seals , or at least shorten there life .

Perhaps you could post a pic or diagram pin pointing exactly the leaky area(s) .That would get your answer quickly.

Ok it’s belt only in this diagram.
So after a few months presume water appears from the peep hole which means the belt must be too tight .
Or it’s somehow miss aligned at fitting and vibrated it’s seal open down the shaft ?
After all it’s gone through 3 all ready , if I understand the whole unit has been replaced not just the impeller + new shaft seal ?

Thanks for your input, yes the whole unit was replaced every time and belt is as loose as can be...

I will get a pic from the owner asap, thank you for your input!
The whole unit has been replaced all times so something else must be wrong here...

Seen on the top pic leak is coming out of that hole on the pump house, inside are coil seal that is the cause of the leak

If that’s a weep hole then all i can conclude after 4 months or so the pulley is misaligned and some how vibrations are knackering the new factory fresh shaft seal .Or your belts waaaaay too tight , kinda unlikely but it’s not unknown for over tightened belts to shorted bearing life in pulleys .

Has the pulley been immaculately cleaned on its fit surface before bolted on to the new pumps ?

Needs a VP tech to chime in .
Sure it’s not a leak from above nearby that’s gravitated to that hole giving the illusion water is coming out ?

Seems odd 3 - 4 pumps on the bounce very odd !

Yes very odd and dreadful problem, always has been the same failure, starts leaking from the coil seal inside pump house and leaks out that hole, Volvo in Iceland has not been very helpful, said it could be cos of over pressure in the cool sys, but that is not the probl.New OME pressure cap is on the tank and no leaks any were else.
But we are so thankful for the time you but in this very strange pump failure and if some one has had any similar failure with the coolant pump on D6 310 hp engine would be great to hear about it!
Thanks again man!
