After a year with a new boat ( Sessa C30) I've still got major issues with the engines - Volvo D3 190. I've been told that it's an air filter issue. Can anyone let me know if you've suffered the same and if you had yours rectified

Its a car engine at the end of the day, you may also get turbo problems later if you use at slow speeds on the rivers, as
in automotive use the turbo is set up by the engine management computer, but in marine use it is vacuum controlled and clogs up the vanes with carbon. Net result is edc faults and poor performance. Good luck.

Hi Murphy
welcome to the mad house

might be nice to know exactly what problems you are experiencing. Lots on here will answer direct issues. i have had problems with D3-160's.

Best person to answer Volvo issues may be spannerman who may be along shortly.

Info....info....info....

I have heard that there is a weak bracket that secures the air filet in place. On earlier(??) engines this meant that when you went over 2700 rpm the pressure sucked on the filter, broke the braket and the fitler get sucked in, closing the air intake and stopping power.

Though this had been rectified now though?

i have a d3 in my rib, great engine but it did have an air filter issue - the later engines have square air filters on them attached directly next to the turbo. This caused the air filter to collapse as the turbo was sucking directly against it causing lack of power and engine warning lights to come on. It hapened 3 times to me, each time the V.P dealer replaced it with a new filter. Now they have supplied the old stlye round filter........problems gone ! Although I am thinking of remotely mounting the round filter further away.

HI Doug

The main problem would probably be with the air filters. At around 3000rpm both warning lights come on and now I’m losing power. Last weekend on a perfect clam day in the Solent I was only getting 221 knots out of her.
This issue has been apparent for nearly a year and Volvo keep insisting that it is an air filter issue.
My main gripe is that although I’ve been told on numerous occasion that this is the issue, no one seem to be able to offer an acceptable solution!!!

Cheers

You should take the issue up with Bates (assuming you bought it from them) let them sort it out. If you bought the boat new your gripe is with the dealer not Volvo.

I was only getting 221 knots out of her.
Two hundred and twenty one knots!
Summat definately wrong!
Seriously.
Tiss back to the Dealer You have to go.
I have been thinking of Re Engineing with a D3 130.
Just now the Old Lump is behaving (touching wood and crossing fingures etc etc ) there does seem to be some snags with these D series.
Split fuel injection feed pipes has been discussed on here in the not too distant past.
Good luck with the Green Thing.
Dunno about Volvos.
Ok mine is Old.
Previous boat was Old too.
The Ford Mermaid was great though, if a bit noisy.
Somehow I felt more comfortable with it.
This green B%gger keeps Me twitchy all the time.
So back to the Dealer as had been said.

It's based on the "D5" engine that you find in Volvo S60's, V70's, and XC 90's. It's very reliable in it's automotive form.
