I am looking at a yacht with a D120 engine.I have had experience of the Volvo 2020 but not the D120.
I would appreciate anyones experience of these engines and how they differ/better than the 2020.When were they introduced...I assume about 2005 ?

My boat has a D1-30, similar engine basically but a bit more powerful. It's been fine. Easy to work on. Big alternator as standard. Accessible service points.

Had a 2008 D1-20 and now have a 2009 D1-30. The bare motors aren't as as similar as their names suggest. If I remember correctly the D1-20 is about 700cc and very quiet / smooth. The D1-30 is about 1100cc and less quiet / smooth. Had no problems with mine in 10 years of use. Some fit a manual switch to trigger the starter solenoid in case of electronic panel failure. Also keep in mind there's no ignition switch to control fuel line solenoid's, fuel level meters etc (Volvo sell and very expensive relay that plugs into the loom)
