I have a very slight oil leak from my Volvo Penta D1-30 engine. It appears to be coming from the sump drain. I have tried tightening it slightly but it still leaks so I am suspecting one of the sealing rings might need replacing. Has anyone else experienced this and does this seem likely? If I do it I would replace both and do it when I empty and replace the oil for the winter.

You are talking about the two "sealing rings" #7 and #8 in the diagram below presumably?

Clean the area thoroughly and watch carefully to make sure the oil is ineed leaking from one of these joints, not running down from elsewhere.

If it is replace them both at the time of the next oil change.

They may be fibre washers but If by chance they are plain copper washers annealing them by heating to a dull red heat for a few seconds and then allowing to cool may soften them sufficiently to allow them to be reused satisfactorily.

I expect we will get suggestions to replace them with something fancy like Dowty washers but it is not a high pressure hydraulic joint so it should not be necessary.
