Volvo D1-30 oil leak

Engine is a Volvo D1-30 with a 130s sail drive. We noticed an oil leak today, which appears to be coming from the seal which is between the flywheel casing and engine block. Not sure whether it is a solid gasket or liquid gasket.

Does anyone have any advice on how best to go about fixing? We are currently underway trying to enjoy the sunshine so hopeful of an easy fix - and hoping that is not wishful thinking.

Worst case, will we be ok as long as we keep a careful eye on the engine oil level and top up faster than it comes out?

Sure its not running down from higher up? Edit. There's no seal in there. Just the crankcase seal, so if the oil is running out of the gap it could well be the real main seal. - i would check higher up, your rocker cover seal for example before delving deep.

Its not going to harm anything as long as you keep an eye on it, but it will make a bit of a mess!

As JWF says, the flywheel does not normally run immersed in engine oil so if engine oil is coming out of the housing then, like a car, it must either be engine oil which has leaked out past the crankshaft seal or gearbox oil, which could be the same oil, which has leaked out past the gearbox input shaft seal.

It's probably quite a tricky job to change the seal so, as advised, do check that it is not coming from somewhere else.

Our D1-30 has had a small leak from that area for at least the last five years. I have a vague intention to one day lift out the engine and replace the crankshaft seal, but haven’t got round to it yet. In our case the oil all collects in a small GRP sump under the engine from which it can be wiped out periodically. Obviously we keep the engine topped up, it doesn’t take much.

As long as the amount of oil from your leak is manageable, I wouldn’t stress about it too much.
