I am crewing in the winter series on a cobra 850 which has a Volvo Md7a engine. Starting is slow but we get there.
I have a Volvo 2002 in my boat, and use the Volvo cold start procedure, full throttle, a pull on the stop lever, throttle back a bit, and fire up. Is it the same for most old Volvo's without heaters?

is there not a brass button to depress on the injector pump when full throttle is engaged

Certainly not on the 2002, but I will have a look next time I'm out on the Cobra.
The reason I'm asking is, because today I started the engine and used the same procedure as I do on my VP 2002, and it seemed to start quite easily.
Having said that today was much warmer, and there was no need to wash the ice off the decks.

How slow?

Is there an air leak in the diesel line (e.g. bleed screw washer, filter seal) ?

The engine has just had a major overhaul, but it does labour when starting.
The owner was not aware of the Volvo cold starting procedure, so that is why I am asking if it applies to the MD7a

No the push the stop in is unique to the 2000 series.
brass plunger is md1 to md17
MD7 is either a pull out cable similar to the stop if one pump or a very short 1/2" approx on the other
Md7 has either cav or Bosch pump

You asked about the 7a :)

I assume you mean pull the stop.
I will look for the brass plunger, if there is one on the MD7a next Sunday.

There is no plunger
Do not touch the stop

To operate the cold start on MD7 either it is a flat lever operated by a cable similar to the stop cable on the side of the fuel pump or it will be a short lever under the body of the fuel pump which will click on .

I will study the engine in more detail next Sunday.
What I thought was a simple question, is obviously more complex than I realised.
As I have said, I am familiar with the cold start procedure on a VP2002, I was just wondering if it applied to all old Volvo's without glow plugs.

this is how i cold start start my md7a

make sure the stop lever on the engine is all the way back to its stop,

there is a small stubby lever on the under side of the CAV injector pump, which is the cold start lever, it does not stay clicked on, you have to hold it to one side.

turn the ignition on and engage the starter, it should start within a couple of revolutions of the flywheel.

if not then you can prime the fuel system with the lift pump lever, and break open an injector and bleed the fuel through.

then try the procedure again...
