Took the boat out last Friday for the first time since launch. Ignition starts first time, revs tick over nicely in neutral (gears disengaged). However, engage gear (forward or reverse) and revs dwindle and die. Noticed that at tickover revs down about 900 instead of expected (and usual) 1,200. Once out of the marina, no problem once the throttle's opened even a little. To be honest, engine not professionally serviced for about a year - just me tinkering. Saving up for a full-strip down next Autumn. This is the only issue. Anyone got any ideas? I'd really appreciate the help. Thanks.

I have found with a friends boat (with a AQ260 - assuming its similar if not the same 5.7 v8 block) that the engine is very reliant on having clean spark plugs. pop them out, clean them up and it should be back to normal again. Will be fitting a slightly hotter plug to his engine to try out, then hopefully hey wont gum up so quickly at slow speeds.

The AQ205 is a 205 hp V6

Isn't that a bit high? 1200 RPM for an idle speed.

Ah V6 engine, getting confused with another model. Still, try cleaning up the plugs, its free and see if it makes the difference.

Spark plugs have a termperature rating on them. A hotter running spark plug will be able to keep cleaner during slower running as the deposits get burnt off. If you dont run slow for too long then there will be no real point in changing them

A quick cleanup, check leads etc. should solve the problem IMHO.

Thanks guys this is all a great help. I've put in some Redex and I'll definitely see to the plugs. Forgive my ignorance but how can I strengthen the idle fuel mix, and what's the best way to clean the idle jet?

Thanks

I gave away my manual on the engine when I switched to an Fi motor but there will be an adjusting screw for the idle mixture but you'll need to be sure which screw. Worth removing the carb and giving it a good clean all round if dirt may be an issue - otherwise you can just move the dirt about. Best way to clean jets is with compressed air after draining all the fuel away.

Be careful or get it cleaned professionally - AFAIK the carbs are no longer made, Volvo still supply bits and there is a huge source in the US if you can be sure of part numbers etc.
