My boat is now ashore on it's trailer and I need to flush the cooling system. Volvo's web site says "...disconnect suction pipe, place tube into bucket of fresh water, keep bucket topped up from hose pipe.....etc" Could I put leg in, say, a water butt with fresh water, run engine, change water a couple of times and then add anti-freeze to final 'rinse'? How much water is in the cooling system? Are we talking pints or gallons?

Any hints much appreciated.

To flush the salt out of the system you could put it in a tank of some sort. I do that on a regular basis when I'm working on it.

To get a/f into the system taking the pipe off the pump is the easiest way. I make up about four gallons of the a/f mix and run the engine until it comes out the exhaust.

There is various drain points to drain the water out of the system, but theres nearly always some left in there. Thats normally the bit that causes trouble when it freezes. If your not going to run the engine over the winter take the water pump impellar out as well. When you put it back in lube it up with KY jelly!

Thanks for the tips Barry. I understand it's a good idea to remove the impeller over winter and I remember reading in MBM (I think) about a replacement cover which does away with all the nuts and replaces them with thumb screw type thingies. Have you seen these and are they worth it? I think MBM put them on their boat.

Depends on the type of pump that you have. I know the ones your talking about and think they were produced for the diesels. I'm not sure they were made to fit the pumps on the petrol lumps. May be wrong, but I've mot seen them.

SpeedSeal is what you are looking for - definately worth it - you can change the impellor in seconds and without tools or loosing those stupid tiny screws in the bilges. I also have a 'doctored' pair of cheap pliers to quickly remove the remains of the old impellor.
