I've inherited a boat with an old volvo penta aq140a in it. It was left outside unwinterised for 6 years so there is a lot wrong with it (cracked manifold, rings, rods etc), I was quoted £600 for a new manifold, so I was going to scrap it and look for a replacement ohc in the 120-165 range.
However, when looking about on here, I've seen repeated references to the engine being a marinised version of the engine you'd find in a volvo 240 car (a B21 I think?). My knowledge of engines is very limited so can anyone tell me whether most of the bits I'd need could be found on the car engine ?

I think you will find that it is the 240 series volvo single ohc. B21 . However you will still need a marine upriser(exhaust) manifold, so your starter for 10 is £600.00 all the other bits on the old engine will be interchangeable. that's a strating point, for uyou you couls also try http://www.keypart.co.uk
hope this helps

You will spend a fortune trying to sort this out .Most probably the rear end of the cylinder head will be corroded and pinholed internally leaking sea water into the rear cylinder.Check the oil cooler is not frost damaged Check the belt pulleys for corrosion this can lead to incorrect valve timing. I was told that this engine was derived from the fuel injected B21 But cannot confirm this
Best of luck

Yes 140A is a Volvo B21 from an 240 saloon. Exhaust Manifolds are £ 400, do a web search for OSCA as they make a pattern one, reputedly better. If its that knackered I'd suggest finding a good base engine from a car or maybe if the price is right a marine one and swopping bits over. I've rebuilt the front of mine and found that not only did the cam pulleys need a good clean but the tensioners although looking OK were virtually seized solid! Cambelt, tensioners etc all come from German & Swedish or similar for around £ 30 the set. Fresh water pump can come from the same source but needs mods. PM me for further info. Get the oil cooler & heat exchanger professionally cleaned by a rad specialist and you'll need a set of o rings, seal etc. Probably about £ 60 from Keypart. DON'T buy from a Volvo Penta dealer except as a last resort!

Barge pole rebuild.

Why not look round for a known quantity running lump. That old engine is going to cost you a fortune in time and money.I would suspect that a decent runner would not be too hard to find at silly money, you cannot give away petrol engines which have been evicted because of folks popping in diesel engines.
Speak to Coastal Rides or similar outfits.

Thanks to everyone who got back to me, you're a knowledgable lot!!

I've spoken to a marine engineer today who backs up what most of you say in that the current old engine is likely to be nothing but trouble. He thinks that the best way around my problem is to use my current bits to marinise a volvo 240 car engine. I've found an american website that can provide a manifold for c£160 plus tax and shipping.

Only problem is that the volvo 240 car appears to have come with 2.1 litre and 2.3 litre engines, anyone know which one corresponds to the 140a?

B21 is the 2.1litre Volvo 240 normally a GL or DL all with 1 or 2 carbs, B23 is the 2.3litre normally a GLE & injected. Not 100% true because various engines were fitted over the years but good enough. If you talk to a Volvo breaker and say B21 they'll know what you want. The B23 is actually the 145A VP engine with around 10BHP more. All the bits interchange AFAIK so you could go for the B23. Some of the much later engines have different ancillaries so avoid the B230 etc as the marine ancilaries won't fit. You'll need to modify the car water pump to take the heat exchanger mail me on tr7v8@phaetonconsulting.co.uk & I'll send some pictures and text explaining how to do it. Marine pump is £ 240! car pump £ 28 so very worth doing.
Where did you find the exhaust manifold????
