A short while ago I innocently posted a question about whether my AQ140 would run if the timing belt was out after snapping...this prompted a flurry of debate between whether the engine be destroyed or not. I'm very very pleased to report that having moved the belt two notches the engine now runs as sweet as it ever did and appears none the worse for its ordeal. Thanks to all those that replied....Iain

The AQ 140 is based on the B21A engine that was fitted to Volvo 240 cars.

Since your post I looked at the manual. The valves are quite deeply reccessed into the head.

I agree with the comments about rubber bands though. Compared with the belt on my small Peugeot it is a Mickey Mouse thing. I reckon the Peugeot belt will last for much longer.

I found it quite easy to over tension the belt on the Volvo despite the built in tensioner. I think that probably sets it up correctly for a brand new belt but is too tight for a used belt ie one which has run for more than an hour. If the belt is too tight the tensioner protests.

This reminds me that it is 7 years since I renewed the Volvo belt.

I would be looking at the tensioner in that case. Its a ball race and shouldn't "protest"

Because I thought the tensioner was getting worn I replaced it but the new one was a little noisey until I reduced the tension just a tiny bit. (This was with a well used belt in service)

I just relate my experiences.

That was 14 years ago and I havn't had any trouble since but I must take a look at the current belt, which has been in use for 9 years (longer than I thought), as the previous one was just beginning to crack at the base of the teeth after 11 years.

Always something that needs doing!!

I had a similar problem when the timing belt on my mitsubishi (car) wa replaced. Had a nasty high rev vibration. Took it back to the mechanic and told him he must have got the timing wrong. He pulled the covers off and showed me all the timing marks were lined up. We agreed to move the belt 1 tooth and the vibration disappeared. The factory had put the marks in the wrong place. I will know for the next replacment (in 4 years).
