Hi there,
I am a new member and would appreciate some help.
I have recently purchased a Conway 26 fitted with 2 Volvo AQ130 petrol engines and 270 outdrives.
I am quite handy with the spanners and want to do my own servicing.
Is there any service manuals/ workshop manuals available.
Particularly : spark plug types, points , oilfilter, engine oil capacity and grade etc.
Similar info on the 270 legs: oils , any grease nipples.
Sorry if it is a bit boring , but have not found my way around yet,
Regards,
Lez Taylor

"and want to do my own servicing."
........That little combination should keep you occupied /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.

Hi Lez and very welcome to the forum.Loads of advice and help available on here on the subject of engines and outdrives. My first suggestion would be to find out what maintaince(if any) has been carried out on those outdrives. If you are lucky the previous owner will have spent his life savings, his kids inheritance and mebbe taken out a loan or two to have then regularly serviced.
If the boat is out of the water check the oil in the outdrives as a priority,an address you will probably want to take a note of for future reference is www.coastalrides.co.uk.They have a neat website and will supply new and second hand spares at sensible prices.Another one you may need is www.keyparts.co.uk who are a VolvoPenta dealer.

Lez once you are into the swing of things may I recommend you pay close attention to the 3 small springs underneath where the leg hinges. These are part of the reverese latch mechanism which locks the leg down when you engage reverse. These are quite cheap but if defective allow the leg to kick up when astern .. which is not desirable. They are under water and difficult to change in situ although you can get to them if you can lift the stern a little (or work underwater of course)
Also dont miss out on the 2 greasing points on the bell housing inside .. you just remove the brass screw cap fill it with grease and screw it backon.
I get my Volvo outdrives serviced every 2 years, including anode changes.

Lez, Hi I also have a Conway 26 with AQ 140's on 280 drives. There is a manual by SELOC which covers all the engines and drives. I have one and it is pretty good... a bit like the Haynes Manual for cars. I'm just removing my engines to replace with Mercruiser 1.7 diesels. Have you any pictures of your boat... there aren't that many of us Conway owners around... cheers and good luck with her.... Iain

Hi Iain,
Will look up the Manual, The Conway I am collecting from Desborough on Sunday and then parking in my drive for a couple of weeks so I can go through it,check it over and fit out to my spec.
Add :calorifier,Inverter, water bag to bow tank, oil pressure guages, gps and fishfinder.
Luckily I have a great neighbour who will let me straddle our and his drives.
When complete I will add some photos.
My Marina is at Bredon, Nr Tewkesbury ,they were nearly wiped out in the floods and will take months to get back to get back to normality.
Don't know when we will launch, but son in law has a large farm about 10 miles away so will store it there.
Regards,
lez

Thanks for the info Brian.
I have ordered a new Clymer manual through Amazon for £17 50 post paid.
Hope I got a good deal
Its coming over from the States.
Does anyone know what plugs are use inthe AQ130c
I have checked and done the cross refeence to NGK and it looks like BP7ES.
I have about 40 brand new BP6ES, would I be able to use these? I know they are a slightly hotter/colder plug
Regards,
Lez

Hi
I am a new member so hope I am putting this in the right place,
I have just acquired a Birchwood 25 circa 1975 with a Volvo aq130 and 270 outdrive. I am trying to find out if this engine is ok to run on unleaded or will it need lead substitute, any help will be much appreciated

I had this set up on a coronet

Watch the raw water pumps - they mount on the front of the timing chain cover and are direct driven off the timing gear
If the seal within the raw water pump fails it pumps in the engine filling it up with water

Mine were B20 engines same as in the old Volvo cars so parts came that way for the base engine

The oil cooler failed so I replaced this with an automotive one which sits sandwiched between the oil filter and block just a flexi pipe to put raw water through the cooler part

Pretty sure all Volvos are ok to use unleaded as they were designed for the UL American market even back then.

Congratulations on buying a Conway 26.
A friend had one in Holyhead in 1974.
I was so impressed with it that I also bought a new one, from the factory but through the selling agents which were called Ladyline.
It cost me £4400 new,
I particularly remember the owner of Conway boats making a point that the bilge fan should be run for 5 minutes before starting the engines.
Regarding the engines and outdrives I nearly had a problem with one of the outdrives as at a year old I was having a Volvo technician do a service to comply with the warranty, the boat had done less than 100 hours from new, I particularly remember a comment he made
"I have managed to save your leg"
Water had got into the outdrive leg. In hindsight it could have been a fishing line cut into the oil seal as often when leaving Holyhead harbour wall fishermen would have their lines out.
If I was to have a boat now with one of these outdrive legs fitted I would ask an engineer to do an outdrive service and watch it being done so I could do it myself in future.
Although the design is slightly outdated this is the sort of boat which should be made today and have the modern Turbo Diesel Engines fitted.
I wish I had one today.

My engine ran perfectly well on basic supermarket petrol, from who ever was selling it cheapest at the time.
and as others have said keep close eye on the leg mantainance.
Outdrives really are a perfect example of a few pence spent now will save you pounds later.

There is a whole world of 270/280 spares out there, ranging from a vast range of genuine VP parts down to OEM clones of varying quality, depends on your pocket.
