Evening.

How often should the valve clearances be checked on my Ad41 engines?

Having the boat lifted soon for water hoses and was thinking of getting someone in to check them at the same time if they need it?

Thanks

Ian

Think it's 200 hours but someone more knowledgable will correct me if I'm wrong. The point of my post is to suggest doing them yourself. They are really was to do.

I wouldn't lose too much sleep over it: on the 2 valve heads, if you check them the first couple of times, they don't change much over time if things are going well. Adjustments on FP have always been quite small.
It's the KAD44/KAD300 where failure to check clearances causes Uncle Big Bill to come along for a visit.

Reason I thought I would ask is firstly she's coming out the water for the day and secondly I'm still a couple of hundred rpm down on how I should be. Also given I'm ventureing out on a few longer trips I want to double check everything is tip top for those 4+hour runs

Thanks

Ian

Hi,
I had a very noisy top end on my starboard 41.. I pulled the valve covers and checked all with a feeler gauge.. I used a 24mm socket on the flywheel to find tdc, very easy.. Just stop the turning after the valves rock on the cylinders you need to work on. Some rockers may feel loose.. 3 of mine were way out almost 2mm! Adjusted to 0.4mm and the engine ran so quite after this...
Perfick!

Whoa! If you adjust valves that are on the rock then you are 360 degrees out. The exhaust valve is just coming off the cam and the inlet is coming onto the cam, totally the wrong way to adjust valves. You need the engine to rotate another complete turn so the lifters are on the back side of the cam i.e. lowest point for the cyl you are adjusting.
The correct sequence for a VP 6 cyl is
No 1 Rock no 6 adjust
5 ". 2 "
3 4
6. 1
2. 5
4. 3
