Can anyone help here please. The entire timing cover (behind the crank pulley ) on both of my engines has been attacked by something resembling battery acid. Its certainly not acid but the paint has come off 90% of each cover. Other parts of the engine seem unaffected. There seems no other course but to remove covers and treat them/re-paint them. My question regards crank pulley. Is there a special tool to remove this pulley? Thanks in anticipation.

The attacking fluid is most likely salt water - check for leaks from the strainer cap or water pump tell-tale.
The large outer pulley and balancer should come off with the six bolts.
Centre bolt holds the inner hub, which will need a suitable sized puller. Don't bash it - risk of damaging bearings.

Many thanks Flower Power. There is a little evidence of salt water ,around the pump/strainer pipes, but not much

HI Tangerine......... the very fact that you say there is "evidence" will be enough in itself !!!.....the action of "a little bit wet, dryed by a hot engine, bit more wet, dried again etc etc etc is just what the rust corossion worm LOVES !!!!!......... a tip to finding the leak is, AFTER all the repainting and replacing etc etc is to sprinkle some talcume powder in the area where you suspect/think the leak is !!!... it shows up like a spotlight !!!!!!....yes its a messy way to do it but IT WORKS !!!

Thank you for the good advise Steve. As it happens I use a product "Ardrox Developer "in the cause of my business. It is an aerosol we use ,sometimes in conjunction with Ardrox Dye Penetrant, and is sprayed on area,s of concern. It dries rapidly to a chalky powder much like talcom powder, and shows up any cracks or leaks. You are quite correct in stating it takes little salt water to cause damage.,but I was quite taken aback by the extent which I have discovered .
