Volvo 4.3GL Petrol.

Anyone know what the tick-over rpm should be, was at the boat last night and it started first time, after being warmed up for a while, it seems to be ticking over a bit too slowly, about 400-500rpm.

Also anyone how i adjust it up a wee bit?

If the tick over has suddenly got slower, check that it's running on all cylinders. One cylinder could easily not be working due to the damp weather this time of year, or a plug lead off.

It should be 650 rpm 'In gear'
There will be an adjusting screw on the throttle arm where it connects to the carb, but you should disconnect the throttle cable first to get your idle set, then afterwards if the cable end doesn't line up with the arm adjust it on its thread until it does, this way you are sure that the cable isn't under load at idle.

Never thought about that, The engine did run well, and when revved responded well, so didn't really sound as if it was missing a cylinder, but will check that next weekend when i go back up.

That is great, i will try all that you mention, one thing where about is the throttle arm located? Is it under the big plastic Volvo cover?

Yes just take of the plastic cover and it should be on the port side of the carb, make sure the engine is warm before adjusting the idle too make sure the choke is off. It may need the mixture adjusting if it runs rough, this will be 1 or 2 small screws with a spring under it either at front or on the side, sorry this is vague but I don't know which type of carb you have fitted, its most likely a 2 barrel which has a single screw low down at the front in the center of the two barrels. Wind it fully in gently then 1 1/4 turns out as a starting point, then fine tune from there, IN for weaker and OUT for richer, then re adjust the idle when you have it running smoothly.

No not vague at all, very useful info i think i know what you're talking about!

It did seem to run well, nice and smooth, so i don't think the mixture is needing adjusted. I will try turning the idle up first and see what happen, if it doesn't work well, then i will start again and check the mixture.
