Hello there,
Please could anyone offer any advice to a continous problem i have had with my volvo engines?
They tend to cut out whilst manouvering or at idle, which makes trying to berth in the marina a nightmare!
The engines were fitted brand new in 2006, and I have always had this problem with them, but at cruising speeds the engines are fine.
I have just had the boat lifted back into the water since it was lifted in September, the boat had 1/4 fuel in the tank, would this have gone stale, as the problem seems to have gotten worse since the lay up period, as now the will not idle at all?
I have cleaned out the fuel filters before the lay up, and nothing seemed obvious there, I also have sprayed the ignition leads with wd40, thinking that damp may be present, but to no avail.
If you quickly throttle up, the engines seem to backfire throught the carb or splutter out, as if the air intake is set wrong?
If the throttle is steadily increased the engine revs will rise ok?
I have recently added to the fuel in the tank with fresh, but problem persists?
Both engines are affected in this way, which leads me to a fueling problem?
Any advise would be greatly appreciated

One easy idea to try is to buy an aerosol of Carb Cleaner and spray it into the engine whilst it is running. You might have a little bit of dirt in the slow running jet. This can't do any harm and if you are not sure what you are doing with the engine its best to get a mechanic to have a look before you start adjusting settings.

Perhaps water in the float chambers?

Have you tried draining them - obviously be careful doing this, IE isolate fuel supply first, only do it when engines are cold, collect drained fuel, well ventalated etc etc

I havent done anything with the carb, but is it possible for water to collect in the float chamber?
I have tried running the engines up to temperature, thinking it was a bit of damp, but this makes no difference.

All marine petrol engines suffer from this sort of thing when laid up for a while. From the sound of it this is an ignition problem.

This describes early ignition whilst the inlet valve is still open resulting in combustion of the fuel in the inlet manifold. Since its very unlikely that someone has fiddled with the timing on both engines I would hazard a guess that the contacts inside the distributor cap are suffering a build up of corrosion causing a slight and erratic change in ignition timing. My advice would be to take off the distributor caps from both engines leaving the leads attached so as not to get them mixed up, then clean up the contacts with a sharp implement. If the contacts are too pitted you will need to replace the dizzy caps.
It’s also worth taking a look at the tip of the rotor arms as corrosion can build up on these also.
Once you have given them a dust off give the insides of the dizzy caps a quick spray with WD40 to keep them in good order for this season.

Sounds more like a weak mixture, if they were new in 2006 they will have electronic ignition with no points to clean/adjust.
Make sure all the ignition leads have good contacts and there is no moisture in the distributor cap, then get the engines warmed up and then adjust the idle mixture as this will give the symptons you describe on initial acceleration if it is too weak.
The fact its OK when cruising is because then it is running on the main jet which is non adjustable.
 
Hi there, i have seen build up on the inside of the distributer on the caps also. It is either, running lean, tick over too low, engine temp to low, old fuel or a combination of all of the above!

I had the same problem with my GLP-Ds . I found that the Holley carbs are subject to a safety recall. Apparently they corrode and block the jets (really useful in a marine application). Because they flood its a safety issue, so Volvo should replace them under warranty.

Thank you very much for helping out!
I will start with the ignition side of things first and work my way out!
Thinking it could be with the dizzy cap and rotar as the boat has stood for a long time whilst carrying out a refit.
Hopefully then I can moor the boat in the marina, without fear of them keep cutting out, and put away the big fenders and boathooks!
