Just bought a Fairline Vixen with aq130d and 290 outdrive.
The leg flips up when reverse gear is used.
Any ideas what to do to stop it happening ?

Not really. Its either the tilt release rod need adjusting, or the reverse latch components are not turning freely on the shaft or the latch hooks are worn.
The latches are around about the 25 quid mark. Needs to come out of the water to do it really

we have 2 orf these and had the same problem on both in the last 6 months, turned out to be brokeb reverse lock bars, they are what the mechanism locks onto. Do not speak to volvo is this is the case just get some 13mm stainless bar 10.5 inches long, that should do the trick.

Had this problem on an earlier boat of mine with a 290 leg. A strip down and clean up sorted it out with no parts needed. It does indicate neglect though and I bet the bellows havent been changed for many years (Volvo say replace every 2 years...but they would wouldn't they!!) and the UJ will be in need of a grease up as will the other grease points. You can do the job in a weekend but you will need help...it's quite a heavy unit. While we are on the subject why not replace the outdrive oil and the hydraulic hoses. I think dring the life of the 290 they changed from normal to mineral oil...need to check this although others reading this may have more precise information.
best of luck

Them there hydraulic hoses cost an absolute bomb and he needs 4 of em.Surely you mean hydraulic fluid .
Some of em use ATF fluid to go up and down if so buy from motor factor at 2.35 a litre do not pay silly Volvo price and that goes for mineral oil steering fluid as well.
