volvo 270 outdrives

hi all, last wknd i had a few problems getting my port side outdrive into gear, i have morse controls and theres always been a firm clunk and still is when engaging, but on a few occasions last wknd it wouldnt engage until the engine(ad21a) hit a few revs nearly causing the missus to take a dive!!
grateful for any advice.

Sound to me like the Morse cable to the gear linkage needs adjusting. Check the outer cable is secure in the clamps and if so try adjusting the inner cable. Not sure about the 270 outdrives but there should be some advice on settings in the owners manual. If not you are looking for a setting which will just put the unit in gear before the throttle cable starts to put throttle on. I should do it asap as engaging gear with more than tickover revs will cause increased wear on the clutch and gears

if you rev up and there is nothing and then you get engagement bit like a slipping car clutch , then clunk engaged it could be drive cones.
Can happen in forward and not in reverse as different cones used for ahead & astern
Check cable connections first as mentioned above of course.
