doing the usual maintenance the other week and took the rocker box off to check the valve clearance, on the 2030 the inlet manifold is part of it and when you take it off the inlet ports are looking at you. noticed that number one and three had oily waxy carbon deposits in them, hmm. put a 3/8th hose on each one, other end in lughole and turned her over, could hear a hissing nose when the valves were closed, hmm. took the rockers off and turned her over again with the hose, hissing noise again, hmm valves are leaking. any way whipped the head of and took the valves out, was quite chuffed the valve seats and valves were black and not a matt contact surface, got the trusty valve grinding stick out and the paste (hadnt used them for must be 15 years, 20 mins later all ticket boo, nice matt finish on the seats etc and ready for the rebuild. noticed that the seat areas on the valves and seats were slightly pitted so assume that the winter lay up allows corrosive marine air to get to work? reason i am so chuffed is of course that if i hadnt taken the rocker box off etc the valves would have got worse and worse. i reckon that i caught them just in time. other interesting thing the inlet valves were the worst.
