Hi,
I've just read on another site the insructions for fitting a Volvo shaft seal. In it the instrutions said that the seal should be lubricated every 200 working hours and replaced every 500 hours or five years. This is a bit of a concern to me. As I've never touched mine... apart from 'burping' it at the beginning of the season when launched. And I'm fairly sure when I asked the guy at the boatyard about whether these should be lubricated he said "no, just purge them when they go in the water after lift-out". Is the boatyard guy wrong? And have I been lucky for the last three years?
Thanks.

The boatyard guy is wrong, they should be lubricated every time they come out water, bit difficult to do when in water,I do mine once a year when lifted out.If you look after them they should last years, last boat 10yrs and still ok.

Yep, I agree with nedmin. Lubricate once a year (usually done prior to lift-in) though it can be done in the water. It's a tiny bit more difficult because if you squeeze the thing upwards too much to get the grease in, a trickle of water comes in. But it does work - we had to do it like this a few times when over-wintering in the Med and afloat.

With regards to longevity, I replaced mine last year, only as part of a major refit, after 22 years. It was still in superb condition and had never leaked a drop. It was though, religiously maintained, and that's the answer with this excellent product.

What is the best method to use to get the lube right into the seal? (Obviously with boat out of the water). I have a tube of Volvo grease but it has a short stubby nozzle. I did try it once and could only inject the grease to about 20mm deep into the seal rather than the whole length. Then, the tube squashed up with all the pushing. Should I employ some sort of hypodermic syringe with a thin, long needle perhaps? What do you reckon? Advice welcome, ta!

There was a detailed thread here on this just last week. It shouldn't take too much finding.
