Having been laid up for several weeks (due to back problems), the boat has been nowhere for a couple of months. Last week, I ran the engine for about a minute and a half (in gear at around 1500 rpm) when I realised that I had forgotten to open the raw water seacock (I ALWAYS check for water being present in the exhaust, but for some reason, this time.........)

I immediately stopped the engine (no alarms went off so it does not appear to have overheated) and opened the seacock, and every thing seems fine - I've since run it (moored) for about 20 minutes in total, and all seems to be well. I wonder however, if these impellors become brittle once run dry, even for a short time, and whether it should be replaced before the next longish trip. (the engine is new and only clocked up 50 odd hours). What do you guys think??

Thanks,

Mike N

Hi Nicho,

From your description of events I'd say you had absolutely nothing to worry about. I'm sure you carry a spare impeller anyway, so I'd carry on as before until the end of the season at least. Impellers don't get brittle that quickly unless already pretty old so, as I say, change it over the winter lay-up if you still feel a bit concerned or the impeller feels less than flexible when you check it then.

Cheers

Jerry

That's how I shredded mine.

It only showed next time I needed the engine for more than the usual 15min in/out with low revs. Then, with no wind it became a long journey.

I would now always open the pump and check...

good luck in any case
chris

I'm with jerrat on this. Had a jelly fish up the strainer two years ago and must have run it for about 15 mins before the alarm went off. After clearing it ran fine for the rest of the season and frankly is ok as a good spare when I replaced it at the end of the season. Why not have a look, it's easy to get at.

I ran my engine (same as yours) for just 20 mins or maybe less with the water off and the impellor was shredded. So I would check it. I very much doubt you would have a problem but better to be safe than sorry . I was not aware they had a high temp alarm.

Thanks, and to the rest of you. I thought the alarm was for oil pressure AND temperature, but may have been thinking of my previous boat (a motor cruiser) - I'll check the manual when next on board. Seems that we are split 50/50 on whether damage has been done! I guess I was looking for 100% saying it would be OK after only a couple of minutes running. I'll have it changed at the end of the year at it's second service. I do have a spare on board, just in case of emergencies.

Thanks again

Nicho

We have 2030 and lost an impellor at sea once. Whilst it's easy to change alongside (10 minutes) it took me well over an hour at sea. Have now fitted a speedseal which makes it much easier to change or service. Just a thought.
