I have spent this a.m. trying to sort out an engine water leak.I can now rule out the hoses and impeller cover.I am fairly certain the leak ie drips are coming from behind the impeller.Could this be the case ie impeller drive shaft ? if so whats the cure.Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks

Different Volvo engine but on my TMD31L I had a leak from behind the water pump. The leak was where the shaft entered the rear of the water pump. I bought a service kit. Refurbishment took about an hour.

Nearly always the shaft seal at the pump end of the shaft)
Had same probelm on mine (pump is actually either Johnson or Jabasco depending on year). There is a "drain hole" on the shaft cover of the pump between the impeller housing and the engine body, where any water that has entered in the shaft area itself drains out before getting to the engine oil seal.

Remove impeller cover; remove impeller, and you should see a small rubber sealing ring sitting in a recess in the pump body; remove this carefully without scratching the pump shaft (long nosed pliers or similar); smear (waterproof) grease on the shaft, fit a spare seal fully into the groove; refit (or replace) the impeller; smear some grease inside the pump body where the impeller touches; put the cover back on the pump.

It cost me 7 euros for a new seal from the local mechanics.
There was also a lot of talk on this about 6 - 12 months ago on this forum.

Easy job and will (almost) certainly cure the problem.
