In an article in PBO recently a smart guy sleeved his Saildrive oil seal for about 30 quid and saved himself 600 pounds against Volvo prices.

My Volvo MD5C, based on the silty Humber, got through four full water pump kits in ten years and less than a 1000 hours.

My raw water pump seals are not leaking but bound to one day, I would like to carry a repair kit. The Volvo price is in the low hundreds. Carrying a sleeving kit for £20 inc VAT, P+P and a couple of new seals at 50p each would be a wise safeguard.

The company Sealmasters Limited [02920 753353 Mr Clive Morris] would be pleased to supply but needs the size. My boat is in Greece and I won't be able to get to it until the summer.

Has anyone out there got easy access to a 2020 produced around 1999 and could put the shaft size and seal dimentions on the forum for the benefit of anyone with similar thought?

Has anyone else had experience of this approach?

The Jabsco on line shop sells seals for about £8 ppp. A new shaft for about £60 and a whole pump for about £160. ( These prices are from memory so don't hold me to them).
Your 1999 MD2020 is probabley a 2020C if it is the same arrangement as my earlier vintage MD2020B the real fun is getting the b***** off !

Just a thought.......

The two bearings and seals can be bought very cheaply from a bearings firm. There is at least one of these dealers in every medium to large town.

All you need are the numbers on the bearings and the old seals. For my 2001 , the bearings cost about 6 UKP each and the better 'double' seals a couple of quid each.

The problem could be buying the shaft on it's own from a Volvo dealer. If not ( crafty buggers) I'am sure a marine engineer could knock you up a few at a reasonable price.

Best of Luck.
