i checked the engine out in prep for a few days sailing and the temp alarm is flashing and the buzzer is sounding off . after checking all pipe runs and connections /filters were all ok i felt the flow and temp of the exhaust outlet and its cool , indicating that its running fine , is it possible that the alarm /sender unit is faulty ? last week it was fine , ran two thirds throttle for 6 hours ,no problem . any ideas ,please ?

Yes the temperature sender is probably dud. However it could also be the wiring or the control panel.
Temperature senders usually make a contact connection when the engine water is hot. So removing the wire at the sender should silence the alarm. If it does not silence the alarm then the problem lays with the wiring or panel. Of course this may all be wrong and hopefully someone will set us correct if it is all more compex.
good luck olewill

[/ QUOTE ] The panel circuit is fairly complex, at least the network of diodes makes it look complex

Youll find the diagrams in The workshop manual

Or clearer I think in the Ownners manual which can be found from HERE

many thanks all - i managed to fix it and had a great weeks sailing ! i checked the sender ,cleaned off some carbon/oil/anti freeze deposits then started up and noticed that the "heater hose" feed pipe to the water pump was collapsing as the pump sucked its supply up from the saildrive intake ! remedy - fitted a wire cored water feed pipe and the alarm ceased ! new one to me ! but it cured it .
