Volvo 200x - avoiding ridiculous filter prices...

Over the past two years I have put together the following which may be of interest to owners of other Volvo 200x engine owners who service their own engines.

Volvo part prices are ridiculous, Keypart seem to have the lowest prices if you want Volvo parts or to purchase in the marine market - they are also very good BUT your local auto factor will have much lower prices on filters -- all you need is the part numbers. Here they are along with this season's prices (all excluding VAT):

CAV296 Water Separator Fuel Filter:
Volvo 858201 - RRP £6.73, Keypart £5.20
Auto Factor equivalent part: Fram C1191-PL, Mann P917x or Bosch N4201 - £1.96
NB as this is not an Engine part your separator may be different to mine and require a different filter.

Engine mounted fine Fuel Filter
Volvo 829913 - RRP £7.38, Keypart £5.70
Auto Factor equivalent part: Bosch N4051, Fram P4186, Fleetguard FF5040 or Mann WK712/2 - £4.49

Oil Filter
Volvo 834337 - RRP £10.21, Keypart £7.66
Auto Factor equivalent part: Fram PH3614 or Fleetguard LF3826 - £5.20
NB The non Volvo part is 1” longer in the body than the Volvo part. If your engine is a tight fit at the front, the non Volvo part may not fit - it will also require a little more oil in the engine to fill the extra filter length.

Using Auto Factor derived filters will save you 50% of the cost of your filters - nearly £15 when VAT is taken into account!

Hope the above is of interest.

Ed

PS My engine is a 1986 Volvo 2001 linked to a 120S Saildrive

Good info...

I've bought 296 fuel filters very cheaply from local Lucas commercial vehicle depots, but I haven't found oil filters yet so your part numbers are useful.

Talking of ridiculous filter prices, what we really need is something which avoids the ridiculous filter fitting design, whereby unscrewing the old filter results in lots of nasty black oil running down the front face of the engine! Neat trick, Volvo!

Re: Good info...

Ref oil spillage; I believe that a nappy can be used to collect most of it - trying next week!

I guess most Volvo owners who do their own maintenance will have their own list. Mine, in case it's of use to anyone with different suppliers, is:

Fine fuel filter on engine - Fram P4186 (same as yours)
Fuel filter above water separator - Motaquip VFF113
Engine oil filter - Motaquip VFL117

Afraid I've lost receipt so don't know exact prices, but far cheaper than VP.

The only service item for which I haven't yet found an alternative is the engine sacrificial anode. Any suggestions?

I use Tesco value nappies. They're cheap and efficient.

Not always best. I used a cheap automotive oil filtre on a Volvo. Properly tightened it deosited all the oil in the bilge. The rogue filtre had a piece of metal at the end which bore on the threaded stub.

The trouble has since lead me to carry the extra cost of a Volvo part rather than spend a day removing oil from the bilge, the cost of 3 litres of oil etc.

Re: Good info...

One way to avoid a mess is to put a screw driver right through the filter vertically, on removing the screw driver the oil will flow out, just have a container ready to catch it. Thanks to Ed for the info I have printed it off for future reference.
With regard to making your own water pump gasket the secret is to ensure it is the same thickness, ie very thin otherwise you will get vacuum loss and a reduced pumping rate. So an old cornflake packet will not work trust me!

excellent info!

This may be of use - enter just about any filter number to get the Fleetguard equivalent:
http://www.fleetguard.com/pdfs/warranty/englishwarranty.pdf

95% of the time they are cheaper than the branded version (..of their product!) but not always so check...

Cheers

I believe that Volvo's filters are made by Mann and Hummel. All filters are not equal in build quality. I prefer to pay a bit more for peace of mind.

From the Mann website, the CAV296 and Engine fuel filters Mann make for the Penta 2000 series are those noted above, M917x and WK712/2 respectively.
The Mann oil filter for the VP2000 is W77.

I'm not sure about this. Keypart give you a choice of Volvo branded or OEM alternatives. I don't have a problem with the OEM parts but the last lot I bought didn't include gaskets/O rings etc. Apart from the faff, by the time you've sourced those the price gap reduces.

Have an equivalent list that I could share if I knew how! for 2003 oil filter.

Height: 59mm
Outer*Dimensions 79 mm
Filter Thread 3/4-16UNF

Have used Baldwin filters from In-line filters for several years. Inexpensive, buy a job lot to save on postage.

But places like Eurocar Parts can be competitive if you are just picking up a couple of filters - quote the Bosch part and they find an equivalent.
