Hi

The rev counter on my volvo 2003 stopped playing ball a few months ago, not a flicker to be seen. Checked the wiring, connections etcetera but nothing seemed to be wrong with it. That meant a new rev counter probably and I delayed buying one as it is not that essential and would wait for winter. Now, miraculously, it has come back to life again. However, its behaviour is odd, to say the least. It flickers + or minus 1000 revs, when the engine is steady and I am sure the readings are off (doing 4.5 kn with 1000 revs, I wish!), but sometimes the reading seems OK. Any ideas what can cause this kind of behaviour and what to do about it would be gratefully received. Not having to buy a new rev counter would be an absolute blessing for my wallet.

Thanks a lot for any help.

Tom

Sounds like a bad connection somewhere or a broken wire at one of the terminals. Try wriggling all teh connections with the engine running and see what, if anything happens. If all connections are good then I would suspect something in the tacho itself (bad connection or pcb breaking down)

Possibly the alternator is faulty but sounds more than likely it is a bad connection somewhere and not necessarily the earth.
