I reckon that I am using around One Litre of oil for every 27 Engine Hours. Can anyone advise me if this is an excessive consumption. I don't see any oil leaks from the engine and the exhaust is not smoking unduly at normal cruising revs of~ 2400RPM

well if your not losing it due to leaks then it's being burnt.
It does sound a bit much to me where do you use the boat , is it on inland water where the engine is not working hard .One possible consequence is glazed bores this would easily burn more oil.
Do you get a fair amount of smoke ( blue or dark grey ) , this could be your valve stem seals .
Mind you like Chippy said is it better to top up with oil than have a big expensive job.
re the Glazing set your springs so the boat cant move and run the engine up in gear of course, do this on a regular basis.
Re valve stem seals , its a head off job !!

Cheers

I have a raw cooled 2001 that began to lose oil: but it was hiding in the cooling water. At the late stage when I found out what was happening there was little sign at low revs (the water looked a little grey but was difficult to see on the water as the boat was moving) but at high revs it turned black! Problem was one way, I never found water in the oil, and due to the cylinder head gasket failing. Try holding an old bucket under the exhaust and check the cooling water if it's sea-water cooled.

I have one of these engines and it doesn't need topping up between oil changes which I do about every 50-60hrs. It may drop slightly from the high mark towards the low mark on the dipstick but thats it. I usually use 2500 revs.
