I have just learnt the hard way, My engine over heated on passage last week, I soon found out the cause, no sea water getting into the exhaust manifold, fortunatly I read about the problem in Westerly owners mag a day or so before. The cause is due to blocking uip of the water ways into and in the exhaust bend where the water is finaly injected into the exhaust, I removed it and soaked it many kettle full of boiling water, and poked around with a screwdriver, fortunatly I had a spare gasket on board, so was able to reassemble it and all is now well, it did however melt the exhaust pipe, which I have replaced fortunatly the muffler was OK. so apart from an exciting moment or two sailing into Whitehaven lock in the dark pooring rain alls now well again, But I have now fitted a temp gauge to the Elbow. £11.00 from a motor shop, it has a sensor on the end of 3 mtrs wire and a sticky pad on the sensor which I have stuck on the Elbow, it reads 21.5 c when running goes up to 50c when not running and eventually when the engine is cold it goes back to 15 c unfortunatly by the time the engine overheat alarm goes off the damage is done in the exhaust. My engine has done 4000 hrs and I have never had the elbow off, but it was well and truly blocked. It runs considerably cooler now at max revs.
