my 2003 had a slight weap past the injector so I want to remove the injector and re-bed it. Trouble is I cant get it out - the slight weap and consequent slight blow by has carbonned up the gap between injector and copper sleeve.

Any suggestions? Any solvent which will shift carbon etc. Fairy Powerspray maybe?

The only solvent I know which will shift carbon without dissolving the copper sleeve is strong solution of ammonia. You can get it from a chemist's shop. I've used it for cleaning pressure burner parts. It's vicious stuff if you take a deep breath!!!

There are specialist injector removal tools. One type is based on a slide hammer with a clamp that is pulled tight by the action of the hammer.

If this engine uses the infamous Volvo sleeves you will need a set of tools to remove and replace the sleeve - this is a head off job.

Yes - thats the one.

I havn't got a Volvo but I'm interested in why the head needs to come off. I've had injectors out of various engines with varying degrees of difficulty but never had to take the head off. Can you explain

Hi i had the exact same problem.I just kept applying penetrating oil and getting a small bit of movement until i could remove it for reconditioning. Then as for resealing i used a machine drill with a flat end which cuts the same diameter as the injector ,using the bit in my hand cut into the bottom of the copper sleve to make a flat surface.Connected back up and the problem was solved and no head off.

I soaked mine in diesel for a week or three before tackling this (though I did decide to take the head off anyway as it is no great job).

The important thing is not to use too much force or you may disturb the copper sleeve, which is definitely a head off job and needs at least 3 different Volvo tools to remove / insert / seal the replacement sleeve.

Most old marine diesels can use a valve grind as the exhaust valve nearest the water injector gets a bit pitted with corrosion.

Back to the injector. Once you think the goo has softened a bit, get a spanner on the flats and gently work it back and forth to loosen it, rather than use a tool to try an 'pull' it.

If the head is still on take care in cleaning out the sleeve, to avoid spilling muck into the cylinder.

Use the volvo injector puller. It has 2 legs that push on the sleeve to keep it in place as the injector is pulled.
