Can anyone advise on a schedule for servicing a Volvo 2002 with sail drive? The cost of an annual service is just under £300 and I thought I might do it myself. Or should I let the engineer do it?
On our 2003 there's a very comprehensive guide to doing the service yourself - I'll have a look this weekend to see if it covers the 2002 as well - in which case you are welcome to a copy.
Visit a Volvo marine dealer (Volspec etc.) and pick up a Volvo 2002 servicing manual which gives clear and concise guides to servicing. However you will find that the servicing parts alone will add up to quite a bit.
I have a 2001 without saildrive. The engine is the same but with 1 cilinder only. Is easy to do the service for yourself. The most important think is to use a antifoul compatible with the aluminiun of your saildrive, avoid water out from the termostate case, change the anode if is half waste, change oil (engine, saildrive), change (oil and diesel) filter, adjust belt, check condition of impeler (better change and to have the old like spare), if your air filter is metalic wash with oil and let dry before reinstall, check the condition of the seal of the saildrive, change the salt water with antifreezeing liquid before layup, repaint the engine if is rust, check alternator charge is ok, check that open of valves are ok and smoke when engine is hot is near colorless and plenty of water is out of the exhaust
Don't be fooled into paying Volvo prices for the oil and fuel filters. Your local car spares shop can supply you with exactly the same filters for about a third of the cost ! . The oil filter is a Renault Five type , the fuel filter is common to a number of industrial/commercial engines. Take them into them and let them crossmatch the part numbers. I have always bought three of each so I have a stock on board, and I'm sure that last year I only spent £21..
If anyone out there has to do a top end overhaul , be aware that valves and valve springs are again a exact match to early Landrover models .. This again saves a small fortune on what is , parts wise , an expensive job.
